ONYX Foundation Scholars

Continuing its mission to highlight the power of education and opportunity, the
ONYX Foundation proudly expands its scholarship program in 2025. Thanks to the
ongoing support of Orlando Health, the Foundation will once again present the
Reginald Alexander Maycock Black & Everett Braynen Hope Scholarship—this year awarded
to four outstanding male students demonstrating academic excellence and leadership
at high schools, colleges, and universities across Florida and The Bahamas. This distinguished scholarship carries deep family and cultural significance. It honors the legacy
of ONYX Magazine Publisher Rich Black’s father and uncle:

  • The late Reginald Black and his wife, the late Udell T. Black,
who owned and operated the first Black-owned restaurant in downtown Orlando during the 1960s.
  • The late Everett Braynen and his wife, Linda Y. Braynen, who
built a reputation as pioneering real estate entrepreneurs in Fort Pierce.

Through these scholarships, the ONYX Foundation not only invests in tomorrow’s leaders but also
preserves and celebrates the enduring contributions of Black families whose vision and perseverance
helped shape our communities.
